If you're looking to really get into the Louisiana marsh and experience what makes our inshore fishing so special, this 6-hour guided trip out of Lafitte is exactly what you need. We're talking about proper time on the water - enough to hit multiple spots, adjust our game plan based on conditions, and really dial in on what's biting. The Barataria Basin is our backyard, and with half a day to work with, we can show you why this area produces some of the most consistent redfish and sea trout action on the Gulf Coast. This isn't a rushed trip where you're watching the clock - it's a full immersion into Louisiana's world-class inshore fishery.
We'll meet at the dock in Lafitte bright and early, and from there it's a short run to some of the most productive marshes you'll find anywhere. The beauty of a 6-hour trip is flexibility - we can start shallow in the grass flats for redfish, then move to deeper cuts for sea trout, or adjust completely based on tides and weather. You'll be fishing from our 24-foot Blazer Bay, which is built for these waters. Shallow draft, stable platform, and all the gear you need already on board. We provide everything tackle-wise, so just bring yourself, snacks if you want them, and that Louisiana fishing license. The boat handles up to four people comfortably, but this rate covers your first two anglers. Trust me, with six hours and the variety of structure we'll hit, everyone gets plenty of shots.
The Barataria Basin gives us incredible diversity in a relatively small area. We'll work everything from shallow grass beds where redfish cruise in inches of water, to deeper bayous and canals where the big sea trout hang out. Depending on conditions, we might start with topwater early in the morning - there's nothing like watching a red blow up on a spook in skinny water. As the day progresses, we'll switch to soft plastics, maybe some live bait if the fish are finicky. The marsh has oyster reefs, drop-offs, points, and grass lines - all prime structure that holds fish. We use light tackle here, typically spinning gear in the 2500-3000 size range with 15-20 lb braid. It's perfect for the fish we're targeting and gives you that full fight experience. The key in these waters is reading the tide and knowing which spots to hit at what stage of the tide cycle.
Redfish are the bread and butter here in Lafitte. These copper-colored bruisers love the shallow marshes, and in the Barataria Basin, we see them year-round. Spring and fall are prime time when they're most aggressive, but even in summer and winter, we find them. What makes reds so special is their attitude - they eat with authority and fight like they mean it. Most of our fish run 20-27 inches, perfect slot-size reds that'll give you a workout on light tackle. They're shallow water fish, often in water so skinny you can see their backs, and they'll eat everything from topwater plugs to soft plastic paddle tails.
Sea trout are the other main target, and Louisiana's speckled trout fishing is legendary for good reason. These fish are abundant, willing to bite, and absolutely delicious. We catch them in the deeper cuts, around structure, and over grass beds. Spring spawning runs can be phenomenal, with fish stacked up in certain areas. They're more finicky than reds but also more numerous. A good trout bite means multiple fish, and on the right day, we'll put you on some beautiful 2-3 pound specks that'll make your day.
Southern flounder are the ninja of the marsh - masters of disguise that ambush prey from the bottom. Fall is prime flounder time when they're fattening up for their offshore spawning run. They're found around structure, drop-offs, and anywhere baitfish concentrate. What's exciting about flounder is they can get big - we see fish over 20 inches regularly, and those broad sides make for great table fare. Black drum are the bulldogs of the marsh, especially the bigger fish that can pull drag and test your patience. Sheepshead round out our target list - these convict-striped fish are around structure like pilings and reefs, and they're some of the best eating fish in the Gulf.
This extended trip gives you the full Louisiana inshore experience without feeling rushed. Six hours is the sweet spot - enough time to really fish multiple areas thoroughly and adapt to changing conditions throughout the day. The Barataria Basin is consistently productive, and with professional gear and local knowledge, you're set up for success. Whether you're new to inshore fishing or you've been at it for years, this trip delivers the variety and action that keeps people coming back to Louisiana waters. The marsh is always changing with tides, seasons, and weather, which means every trip is different. Book your spot and experience why Lafitte has earned its reputation as one of the Gulf Coast's premier inshore fishing destinations.
